Historical
Technology
Originals in daily use
The Achenseebahn is Europe's oldest cog railway operated exclusively with steam locomotives. Since its opening, it has connected Jenbach with Lake Achensee and preserved historical technology and vehicles in their original condition. In this chronicle, the locomotives, the carriages, and the workshop are presented, which are maintained with great craftsmanship and technical precision so that the historical operation and the unique steam operation remain tangible for visitors.
Locomotives
No. 1 - Theodor, No. 2 - Hermann, No. 3 - Georg, No. 4 - Hannah were built in 1888-1889 at the Vienna Locomotive Factory Floridsdorf as 4 meter-gauge steam locomotives for mixed adhesion and cogwheel operation. They have been in service since 1889. Locomotive No. 4 was used as a donor for spare parts after World War II. After many hours of work, it was successfully rebuilt. All 4 locomotives are in operation.
Carriages
The Achenseebahn has 4 open and 2 closed passenger carriages. Each carriage has 55 seats and a platform with standing places. The compartments are enclosed, and the conductor reaches the passengers via a footboard mounted on the long side.
The truly historic salon carriage can also be rented. Especially for railway enthusiasts, we assemble any desired train composition so that during a special trip, simulated departures are also possible. For this, we know the most beautiful photo spots. There are still 2 freight wagons today. These are used exclusively for internal freight transport.
Workshop
In the Achenseebahn workshop, all repairs as well as the annual overhauls of the historic steam locomotives and their associated carriages are carried out. Here, traditional craftsmanship, technical know-how, and the experience of many generations come together to preserve the unique operation of this more than 130-year-old cog railway.
From November to April, all locomotives are completely dismantled, inspected, and prepared for the new season. Wear parts are replaced, boilers and chassis are checked, components are cleaned, adjusted, or reproduced according to historical specifications. The carriages also undergo comprehensive maintenance during this time to ensure safety, comfort, and reliability.
In the winter months, there is therefore high activity in the workshop, as each individual locomotive is carefully brought up to standard. The goal is that by the start of the season on May 1, all vehicles are operational and the Achenseebahn can once again run punctually and reliably under steam. In this way, the traditional technology is preserved year after year and made tangible for future generations.
History of the Achensee Railway
The oldest steam-operated cog railway in Europe
In 1886, K.K. Consul Theodor Friedrich Baron von Dreifuss from Grüneck near Dorf Kreuth in Upper Bavaria applied for the concession for a cog railway or a railway connection from Jenbach in the Inn Valley to the southern tip of Lake Achensee. The neighboring communities had great concerns about this modern cog railway. The Fiecht Monastery, as owner of Lake Achensee and operator of the steamship service, however, supported the railway project.
In 1926, the unauthorized extension was legalized through a railway law permit. The new terminal station Seespitz/Achensee now had a new station building and a new steamer pier. This brought the railway to a length of 6.76 km.
The track still ends here today, but the appearance of the station was adapted to current transport needs after a renovation in 1971.
On August 1, 1888, His Majesty, Emperor Franz Josef I, granted the concession for the construction and operation of a narrow-gauge locomotive railway with mixed adhesion and rack rail operation. The document, partly handwritten in gold and bearing the imperial seal, is still intact in the possession of the Achensee Steam Cog Railway. The concession period was set at 90 years. The construction was carried out by the Berlin construction company Soenderop.
On June 8, 1889, the grand official opening celebrations took place. With a construction length of 6.36 km, the railway line did not quite reach the lake, but ended about 400 meters before the steamship dock at the Seespitz stop. This measure was taken with the intention of the Fiecht Monastery to build a conveyor track on which passengers' luggage and goods would be transported from ship to train and vice versa for a separate fee.
The licensed conveyor track existed until 1916, when it was dismantled by the Austrian military administration and the tracks were extended to the steamer dock.
In addition to passenger transport, back in the day the main task of the railway was the transport of goods, especially wood from the forests around Lake Achensee.
For the first time at the 100-year anniversary in 1989, passenger numbers exceeded 100,000, reaching 121,900 passengers. In 1991, as many as 134,100 passengers were counted during the summer season (6 months). Until 2010, the figure was always above the magic number of 100,000, except in 2007 with 97,960 passengers.
